A sigmoid function is a continuous, differentiable function of infinite domain in the shape of the letter S, sigma in Greek, therefore sigmoid. These functions approach certain limits, asymptotes, as x tends to plus or minus infinity. Examples of sigmoid functions are the logistic, the hyperbolic tangent and the inverse tangent functions.
