Use this dialog box to generate random numbers following a specified distribution.
Generation
Indicates the distribution by which random numbers are generated:
Uniform
Select this option to generate uniformly distributed random numbers.
Select this option to generate random numbers following the Bernoulli distribution. When you select this option, you must type the probability of success in the Probability box.
![]() | Because the Bernoulli distribution is a discrete distribution having two possible outcomes, the range of generated values is limited to the Minimum (on failure) and Maximum (on success) scaling values indicated for this operation. |
Select this option to generate random numbers following the beta distribution. When you select this option, you must type the exponents, a and b, for this distribution in the Exponent a and Exponent b boxes, respectively.
Select this option to generate random numbers following the binomial distribution. When you select this option, you must type the probability of success and the number of trials in the Probability and Trials boxes, respectively.
![]() | For any given number of Trials, the possible range of generated values is from 0 through Trials. If you want the output values of this command to match exactly this range (i.e. the natural range of the function), you must set the Minimum and Maximum scales for the operation to these values in order to avoid scaling. |
Select this option to generate random numbers following the Cauchy distribution. When you select this option, you must type the scaling and offset arguments for this function in the Scale and Offset boxes, respectively.
Select this option to generate random numbers following the chi-square distribution. When you select this option, you must type the number of degrees of freedom argument for this function in the Degrees of Freedom box.
Select this option to generate random numbers following the exponential distribution. When you select this option, you must type the average rate of occurrence for this function in the Mean Rate box.
Select this option to generate random numbers following the F distribution. When you select this option, you must type the number of degrees of freedom arguments for this function in the Degrees of Freedom 1 and Degrees of Freedom 2 boxes, respectively.
Select this option to generate random numbers following the gamma distribution. When you select this option, you must type the exponent a for this distribution in the Exponent a box.
Select this option to generate random numbers following the Gaussian or normal distribution. When you select this option, you must type the mean and variance for this distribution in the Mean and Variance boxes, respectively.
Select this option to generate random numbers following the Poisson distribution. When you select this option, you must type the number of arrivals for this distribution in the Arrivals box.
Select this option to generate random numbers following the Student's t-distribution. When you select this option, you must type the number of degrees of freedom argument for this function in the Degrees of Freedom box.
Refer to Random Distributions for additional information on this subject.
Specifies the random number generator seed. You can type a seed of your preference in this box, or use a known seed to repeat a previous outcome.
Output
Specifies the worksheet location for placing the results of this operation.
Specifies the number of rows to be filled with the generated numbers. Type in this box the number of rows you want filled.
Specifies the number of columns to be filled with the generated numbers. Type in this box the number of columns you want filled.
Select this option to place the results of this operation in a new document workbook.
Select this option to place the results of this operation in a new worksheet.
Select this option to place the results of this operation starting at the worksheet location specified in the box to the right of this option.
Refer to Specifying Output Locations for additional information on this subject.
Scale
Type in this box the minimum value for scaling the generated random numbers.
Type in this box the maximum value for scaling the generated random numbers.
![]() | Scaling values are initially set to the natural range of the underlying distribution functions. Values set for a particular Distribution are remembered, so changing a selected distribution causes scaling to change to the last set of specified values for the new distribution. |
The binomial distribution natural range cannot be known in advance because it depends on the specified number of trials (Trials). This distribution's default scaling is set to 2,147,483,648. Refer to Binomial for additional information on scaling this distribution.
Generation Order
Select this option to generate data along the rows of the indicated Columns.
Select this option to generate data along the columns of the indicated Rows.
![]() | These options are not relevant if 1 is indicated in either the Rows or Columns boxes. |
Closes the dialog box and carries out this operation.
Closes the dialog box without carrying out this operation.
