Sampling dialog box

Top  Previous  Next

Use this dialog box to sample data from existing series at constant intervals or following a selected distribution.

Input

Specifies the worksheet location of the input data for this operation.

Valid Input Range

Provides a reference to the extent of the data available in the currently active worksheet. Use this range as a guide for typing valid extents in the Input Range box.

Input Range

Type in this box the range of cells from the currently active worksheet you want to use as input for the command.

Series in Rows

Check this box to specify that the data indicated by the Input Range box is organized in rows as opposed to columns (the default).

Refer to Specifying Input Arguments for additional information on this subject.

Output

Specifies the worksheet location for placing the results of this operation.

New Workbook

Select this option to place the results of this operation in a new document workbook.

New Sheet

Select this option to place the results of this operation in a new worksheet.

Range Position

Select this option to place the results of this operation starting at the worksheet location specified in the box to the right of this option.

Refer to Specifying Output Locations for additional information on this subject.

Options

Sample Size

Type in this box the size of the samples you want to generate. If sampling is carried With Replacement, the maximum size of the samples is not restricted; otherwise, the size of the samples is restricted to the length of the input series minus one.

Samples

Type in this box the number of samples you want to generate for each of the input series.

NoteThere are some restrictions to the number of possible samples that may be generated when the Distribution box is set to Equidistant.

With Replacement

Check this box to sample with replacement, where items that are drawn are not removed from the selection pool.

NoteThis box is not available when Distribution is set to Equidistant.

Sampling Engine

Distribution

Specifies the distribution by which values are selected from the input series.

Uniform

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating uniform random numbers.

Beta

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following the beta distribution and a one time pair of randomly generated arguments for the distribution function.

Binomial

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following the binomial distribution and a one time randomly generated value for the probability of success for the event.

Cauchy

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following the Cauchy distribution and a one time pair of randomly generated values for the scale and offset of the distribution.

Chi-Square

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following the chi-square distribution and a one time randomly generated value for the number of degrees of freedom of the distribution.

Exponential

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following the exponential distribution and a one time randomly generated value for the average rate of the distribution.

F Distribution

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following the F-distribution and a one time pair of randomly generated values for the number of degrees of freedom of the distribution.

Gamma

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following the gamma distribution and a one time randomly generated argument for the distribution function.

Gaussian

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following the Gaussian or normal distribution and a one time pair of randomly generated values for the mean and the variance of the distribution.

Poisson

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following the Poisson distribution and a one time randomly generated value for the number of arrivals for the distribution.

Student's

Select this option to sample values from the input series by generating random numbers following Student's t-distribution and a one time randomly generated value for the number of degrees of freedom of the distribution.

Equidistant

Select this option to sample values from the input series at equal intervals, of Sample Size in length. The length of the intervals is given by the largest integer, smaller than or equal to the size of input series divided by the specified sample size:

Refer to Random Distributions for additional information on this subject.

Seed

Displays a default seed for the random number generator. You can type a seed of your choice in this box, or use a previous one to repeat an outcome.

NoteThis option is not available when Distribution is set to Equidistant.

OK

Closes the dialog box and carries out this operation.

Cancel

Closes the dialog box without carrying out this operation.
