Difference and Summation dialog box

Top  Previous  Next

Use this dialog box to carry difference and summation operations in one or more series. You can use differencing to remove seasonality and certain types of nonstationarity from time series.

Input

Specifies the worksheet location of the input data for this operation.

Valid Input Range

Provides a reference to the extent of the data available in the currently active worksheet. Use this range as a guide for typing valid extents in the Input Range box.

Input Range

Type in this box the range of cells containing the data you want to use as input for this command.

Series in Rows

Check this box to indicate that the data specified by the Input Range box is organized in rows as opposed to columns (the default).

Refer to Specifying Input Arguments for additional information on this subject.

Output

Specifies the worksheet location for placing the results of this operation.

New Workbook

Select this option to place the results of this operation in a new document workbook.

New Sheet

Select this option to place the results of this operation in a new worksheet.

Range Position

Select this option to place the results of this operation starting at the worksheet location specified in the box to the right of this option.

Refer to Specifying Output Locations for additional information on this subject.

Operation

Difference

Select this option to carry out differencing in the selected series. Differencing can be used to remove seasonality and certain types of nonstationarity causes, such as trend, from data.

Summation

Select this option to carry out summation in the selected series. Summation will allow you to convert a previously differenced series to its original form, provided the initial values for the original series are available (see Include Initial below).

Options

Operation Lag

Specifies the lag at which the difference or the summation operation takes place.

Difference:image002d
Summation:image004d

Include Initial

Specifies to include initial values in the output. Initial values are those values in the original series on which the difference and summation operations have no effect. As an example, when carrying an adjacent-point difference operation (Operation Lag set to 1), there is no possible differencing for the first point in the series because this point does not have a previous with which to operate.

OK

Closes the dialog box and carries out this operation.

Cancel

Closes the dialog box without carrying out this operation.
